Only appearing at the end of November 2022, ChatGPT has quickly attracted millions of users, becoming a "fever" worldwide. So what is ChatGPT that is getting so much attention? What are the benefits and limitations of this application? What risks can ChatGPT bring to students? The article below will give a complete picture of this application.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT (full name is Chat Generative Pre-training Transformer) is an AI application developed from the GPT - 3.5 model of the startup OpenAI (USA), specializing in AI research and development. This tool is causing a global "fever" with its high interactivity, trained to give answers similar to a conversation with a real person. Chat GPT is trained using a machine learning technique called "Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF)".

According to statistics, ChatGPT currently has more than 10 million users since its launch on November 30, 2022.

ChatGPT does not support the Vietnamese market yet, so users must perform some tricks to register an account to be able to experience the use. Domestic users must use a virtual private network (VPN), rent a foreign phone number for about 1 USD, use an international payment card to register or buy an account from someone else.

How ChatGPT works

The way ChatGPT works is quite simple. They receive your questions or statements. Then they give you answers to all those questions. However, to be able to operate like this requires extremely complex algorithms.

This simulation uses an infrastructure-based approach, taking text data from the internet. A total of 570GB from various sources and 300 billion words are fed into the system.

As a language model, it works on probability. It predicts, analyzes and gives the answer. In case the model gives the wrong answer, the correct answer will be updated immediately. This will strengthen the system's knowledge and the information will become more accurate in the future.

One of the things that sets this technology apart is that it continues to learn even as it guesses what the next interval will be. Not stopping helps it increase its understanding of user suggestions and queries.

Benefits of ChatGPT

  • Answering questions in all fields: With a huge database, the ability to synthesize information and communicate easily, ChatGPT can help us find answers to life's problems. However, we need to be alert to know that this information has not been verified and has unknown origins.
  • ChatGPT can act as a digital assistant, helping us do tasks such as coming up with ideas to answer customer questions, composing email newsletters, writing attractive advertising content on social networks, writing code...

ChatGPT is used as a chat interface, supporting Vietnamese well.

  • Research Support: ChatGPT's much-needed support will help advance the state of the art in research areas such as natural language processing and machine learning.
  • In the field of automation: ChatGPT will shorten the data entry process and simplify operations in supply chain management, increasing work productivity.

Limitations of ChatGPT

  • ChatGPT can only give answers based on the data it has been trained on, having difficulty handling open-ended questions.
  • ChatGPT uses information learned from training data to generate responses. This can be erroneous. Therefore, all outputs must be fact-checked for accuracy and timeliness.
  • ChatGPT may not provide insights or understand context or nuance in a conversation.
  • Depends on the underlying data. If the database is skewed or incomplete, ChatGPT's responses may also be skewed or incomplete. This requires the construction of a detailed, diverse, and representative database.

When challenged about making a mistake in the 1+1 calculation, the AI offered illogical calculations and irrelevant theories, rather than admitting to the wrong information.

  • Lack of awareness of current events. ChatGPT will not be able to handle any content that comes out after 2021. So if you want to create content that is trending right now, you will have to do it yourself.

How does ChatGPT affect students?

  • ChatGPT's thesis writing ability has many experts concerned about the possibility that students could take advantage of this tool to cheat on exams; turning ChatGPT into a "writer" of essays, theses, code...
  • The abuse of AI can also stunt students’ thinking ability and make them lazy and dependent on artificial intelligence. This is extremely dangerous because when entering the labor market, students are not only “empty” of knowledge and creativity, but also lack will, determination and passion for work. This leads to constant job hopping or early dismissal from the enterprise.

Use your intelligence wisely and don't depend on it.

  • The next generation of artificial intelligence has the potential to replace white-collar workers, from highly paid doctors and management consultants to home tutors. Many experts predict that some jobs could be wiped out in the future. This means that finding a job will become more difficult and competitive than ever.

How do students use ChatGPT to achieve high learning efficiency?

Students can use ChatGPT to look up, synthesize, summarize information, and suggest ideas. However, instead of asking ChatGPT to do your homework for you, use it as a guiding tool, suggesting ideas for you when you face a difficult assignment or project that you do not know how to solve.

Not all information provided by ChatGPT is accurate. Therefore, students need to know how to select information and verify it from many different sources before including it in their assignments, essays, etc.

Google Search is a familiar search application from the past until now. However, the appearance of ChatGPT makes the "senior" worried about being surpassed. This is understandable, you are good but your opponent is not mediocre. The same applies to studying. It is not easy for students to use ChatGPT to justify and "trick" teachers because the school can apply the form of oral exams - forcing students to study and understand in order to pass the subject.

Thus, students should only take advantage of ChatGPT but not abuse it to cheat, "study for someone else, take exams for someone else".
