Defeating more than 100,000 strong opponents, DNU male student excellently entered the Finals of the 7th English Talent Competition

Outstandingly surpassing more than 100,000 candidates in the preliminary round, nearly 200 "formidable" opponents in the semi-final round, Hoang Khac Cuong - a student of class TA 15.05, English Language Faculty, Dai Nam University, has entered the final round of the 7th English Talent Contest for students in the capital, 2023. The contest is jointly organized by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union - Vietnam Student Association of Hanoi and the International English System ICE IELTS.

Determined to "grab" the championship

Khac Cuong ranked 8th in the list of finalists of the 7th English Talent Contest for students in the capital with an average score of 6.8. Of which, the listening score was 7.5, reading score was 6.5 and writing score was 6.5. This result "defeated" many opponents from famous foreign language schools such as: Diplomatic Academy, Hanoi University, Hanoi Pedagogical University, University of Foreign Languages - VNU, ... and candidates from schools: Foreign Trade University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, National Economics University, Hanoi University ... present in the final round.

“I was extremely surprised to make it to the finals and to be ranked above many strong opponents. I set the highest goal for myself in the finals, which is the championship. But no matter what the result is, I am very happy to have the experience and compete with the top students in the capital; I will use that as motivation to compete and develop myself,” the 10X shared.

To best prepare for the final round, Khac Cuong is actively reviewing the necessary knowledge, supplementing social knowledge for the question and debate sections. At the same time, the male student actively exchanges and learns experiences from teachers of the English Language Department of Dai Nam University.

“It can be said that I can achieve the results today thanks in no small part to the teaching and guidance of the teachers of the English Language Department. Creative and innovative learning methods help me gain more knowledge and skills to conquer the competition,” Cuong said.

Despite having an IELTS certificate of 7.5 and being exempted from some subjects, the male student still attended every class without missing a day. After 3 semesters, Cuong's overall score was above 9.0. All of his major subjects were 9.0 or higher.

Secret to learn English well

Sharing his method of learning a foreign language well, Khac Cuong said: English requires learners to be diligent if they want to get the “roots”. To memorize vocabulary and pronunciation, Khac Cuong often reads English books and newspapers, does exercises on the Internet; watches Youtube, foreign movies without using subtitles.

When encountering new words, Khac Cuong will look up the meaning, pronunciation and usage in sentences. Then, he writes down and applies the newly learned vocabulary and grammar to daily life such as texting, commenting, writing articles, etc.

Once you have a solid foundation, you only need to practice Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing skills with reference books and do online tests.

“For foreign languages, the most important thing is to be diligent and use them regularly. Don’t think English is difficult. As long as you are determined to learn and make an effort, you will definitely “master” the most popular language in the world,” Cuong affirmed.
