DNU IT students design mini CNC engraving machine that is not inferior to "expensive" products on the market

Instead of buying an expensive mini CNC engraving machine (ranging from 15 million to 120 million VND), Vu Minh Son - a student of IT class 13.02 designed a mini CNC engraving machine from a desktop DVD drive. Although still rudimentary, this machine completely meets the needs of engraving images on demand on all materials.

Creative with a saving mindset for every home

Minh Son is currently a final year student of the Faculty of Information Technology, Dai Nam University. He is currently working on his graduation thesis “Programming to control CNC engraving machines” under the guidance of Dr. Hoang Xuan Hien.

The male student said that the reason for choosing the topic and the determination to realize the idea of designing a mini CNC carving machine came from the mindset: "Saving for every family".

“Buying a mini CNC engraving machine costs a lot. Meanwhile, not everyone has enough economic conditions. The frequency of use is also not much, causing waste…” , Minh Son expressed.

Minh Son likes to explore, research and invent IT products.

That thought urged 10X to start researching and learning deeply about the circuit board; power source, mini CNC engraving head; Laser GRBL v4.9.4 software,... The male student took advantage of 02 DVD drives of the desktop computer to make the frame, used the Main clamping device to repair mobile phones to make a clamping base for the Y axis of the mini CNC engraving machine.

After 4 weeks of research and manufacturing, Minh Son's design was officially "launched". From simple materials, the male student has created a complete, sturdy and professional mini CNC engraving machine that is not inferior to the products on the market. Accordingly, Minh Son's mini CNC machine can engrave logos, labels, images, writing... on many different materials such as: metal, cardboard, wood, electronic circuits, fruits...

“Basically, the machine’s appearance and speed are limited. However, this homemade machine still works well, can meet the needs of normal engraving while saving costs. If more investment is made, this machine can definitely “make a difference” and be popular in the future,” 10X affirmed.

Lucky to study in a dynamic and modern environment like Dai Nam University

Since he was in high school, Minh Son realized that IT is a development trend of modern society. This is a "sought-after" career in the future with a high income. Son himself is also a person who likes to "tinker" with computers and technology devices, so he decided to choose IT as his future career orientation.

During the research process, realizing that IT is a "long-standing" major at Dai Nam University; the teaching staff are all prestigious experts; the curriculum is closely related to reality, with a lot of practice time,... Minh Son immediately submitted his application to the school.

After nearly 4 years of studying, Minh Son has further confirmed that his choice was correct. During his studies, the 10X approached and mastered programming languages C++, C#, Python, Java, embedded programming... With the enthusiasm, facilitation and business connections of the Faculty, Minh Son has many opportunities to create high-tech products from programming languages and computer hardware devices.

“I feel lucky to be studying in a dynamic and modern environment like Dai Nam University. Here, I can freely create, make mistakes, and correct myself to create my own projects and products. There are few schools that create so many conditions for students to practice and connect with businesses like this.”

With an impressive performance at the DNU Job Fair 2023 (May 26), Minh Son recently received a job offer from Media Bridge Vietnam Co., Ltd. 10X is the first IT student to be "closed" by the employer.

Wishing Minh Son to continue to have more projects and designs with high applicability, contributing to the socio-economic development of the country; becoming a great ambassador of the Faculty of Information Technology, Dai Nam University.
