With the mission of “Educating graduates to have a good life and be good citizens”, Dai Nam University focuses all resources to improve the quality of training. Students are not only trained in professional knowledge but also trained in professional skills, soft skills, and “survival” skills through seminars, talks, and practical experiences. The workshop “Providing knowledge and first aid skills for students of Dai Nam University” is one of the activities within that policy of the University.

On the school side, all staff and students of the Health Department and students of the invited faculties attended.

On behalf of Safi Service Joint Stock Company, there were: Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Nhai - Deputy Director; MSc. Dr. Hoang Duc Vinh - Lecturer; Dr. Nguyen Van Binh - Lecturer; Dr. Trinh Thi Khanh - Lecturer; Dr. Ha Thi Sang - Lecturer.

Providing first aid knowledge and skills to students is necessary.

Speaking at the program, Mr. Le Van Duy - Head of Nursing Department of Dai Nam University said: Escape and first aid are skills that must be popularized for everyone to apply when necessary; we should not be too dependent on medical staff because human life can be in danger in just a few seconds.

“We hope that the Workshop will not only contribute to improving the professional skills of students in the Health Department but also provide knowledge, soft skills, and life skills for students of Dai Nam University. After the program, students will grasp basic first aid techniques to promptly handle cardiopulmonary resuscitation situations…”

Mr. Le Van Duy affirmed: Teaching first aid skills to lecturers and students is necessary.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Nhai commented: Most events inside and outside of school are crowded and have many potential risks. However, Vietnamese youth pay little attention to this issue and are not equipped with knowledge of how to escape from crowds and first aid skills. Therefore, when an emergency occurs, if the victim does not receive first aid or receives first aid incorrectly, it will lead to life-threatening situations.

“In fact, the brain will die after the heart and lungs stop after 4 minutes. The brain will die completely after 10 minutes. Meanwhile, it takes a long time for the ambulance to arrive. If we have first aid skills, the possibility of saving the victim will be higher. Therefore, we hope that after the workshop, teachers and students of Dai Nam University will join hands with Safi to share first aid knowledge to many people; together creating a safe and healthy community,” Ms. Thu Nhai shared.

Ms. Thu Nhai wishes: First aid skills will be shared by DNU teachers and students and spread to people around.

Things to keep in mind when giving first aid and escaping in a crowd

At the program, MSc. Dr. Hoang Duc Vinh directly shared the skills of escaping from a crowd with teachers and students. Accordingly, when arriving at any location, find and remember the exits because when an incident occurs, the main exit is often not the optimal exit; stay calm, do not scream to avoid panic; always keep your feet steady; do not move against the crowd; do not run because running can easily cause you to stumble; keep both hands in front of your chest to create space for your chest, avoid the chest being compressed too tightly, the lungs will not open to breathe.

At the same time, MSc. Dr. Hoang Duc Vinh also shared and trained basic first aid skills for lecturers and students of Dai Nam University. Special emphasis was placed on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques.

MSc. Dr. Hoang Duc Vinh also explained why it is necessary to perform chest compressions, the position of chest compressions, the posture to perform them, how to perform chest compressions for children and adults, etc. Accordingly, it is necessary to press hard, press quickly, and continuously press 30 times at a frequency of 100-120 times/minute.

Special notes when giving first aid: Do not interrupt chest compressions for more than 10 seconds; If you are not ready to give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, just do chest compressions; Assess the victim every 2 minutes (5 cycles of chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation); The person performing the compressions must use the strength of both hands to press perpendicular to the patient's body; Perform chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation until the patient starts breathing again or when medical staff arrives.

Teachers and students actively asked questions to the doctor.

Answering the question: "Should I call an ambulance first or give first aid to the patient when I am alone there?" , MSc. Dr. Hoang Duc Vinh said: "You must call an ambulance first. Turn on the speakerphone to listen to instructions from medical staff and perform first aid on the patient. Persistently performing chest compressions will increase the chance of saving the patient's life."

Useful practical lessons

At the workshop, MSc. Dr. Hoang Duc Vinh and his colleagues provided practical instructions for staff, lecturers and students of Dai Nam University on cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques. Accordingly, teachers and students performed first aid on a patient simulation according to 5 cycles of chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

Students are trained in first aid right at the program.

Students not in the Health sector also enthusiastically participated in the training.

Many students expressed their excitement and enjoyment when practicing first aid on patients. Dong Thuy Trang - a student of Chinese class 16.03 shared: "Before, I thought first aid was the job of medical staff. I never thought that I could also give first aid to others. After this workshop, I am confident that I can participate in first aid in the community if I encounter an accident."

Students are enthusiastically guided and corrected by doctors.

Teachers also actively participate in practice.

Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao - a student of Nursing class 15.02 expressed: "The teachers and doctors have wholeheartedly helped me correct basic mistakes in first aid. I feel that seminars and practice sessions like this are very useful, bringing more practical knowledge about the profession. I hope that the Faculty and the University will regularly organize such programs to provide more first aid knowledge for students of the Health Department in particular and students of Dai Nam University in general."

Mr. Le Van Duy said: In the coming time, the Nursing Department will continue to organize seminars and first aid competitions to improve professional qualifications, help students master professional skills, and become good nurses in the future.
