Many students often ask: "Why can't I learn English well?". Mr. Phung Van Than - lecturer of the English Language Department at Dai Nam University will "decode" this question and suggest some effective solutions for students to learn English.

Not enough time for this subject

Usually, the duration of a lesson is not enough or the number of lessons in a week is too few. It is best to practice every day and the duration of each practice session must also be at a relative level. This is the principle of “quantity and quality” in philosophy: enough quantity will change quality. In other words, only when you spend enough time on English will you make progress.

Practice self-study habits

As you know, “University is self-study”. When building a course outline, for every 1 hour in class, students will have to spend 2 hours studying at home. First, students need to read the lesson in the textbook to know the content to be learned in the next class, mark the content they do not understand so that they can focus on listening to the lecture in class and ask the teacher if they do not understand. In addition to the textbook in class, students can read the reference materials that the teacher suggests in the course outline or research online materials. Preparing lessons in advance will help students to always be proactive in receiving knowledge.

Build a scientific self-study schedule

Based on the school timetable, students build a scientific self-study timetable. This timetable does not have to be fixed throughout the semester but can be changed. For example, in the early stages of poor listening skills, students can spend more time studying this skill during the week. However, if by mid-term listening skills have improved, they can add more time to writing skills if this skill is not good. The important thing is that when looking at the timetable, you will know what needs to be done during the day and you will use your time more effectively.

Be strict with yourself

Discipline is very important in all jobs, not just in learning English. Those who have a bad start will easily give up, but think about it: if you give up, you will never be able to do it. So you have to train yourself to be disciplined, such as ensuring the duration of each study session, concentrating when studying, working seriously, etc.

Create interest in the subject

We must admit that interest in a subject is not easy to get. To create interest, the most important thing is that students must understand the subject. Therefore, spending time preparing lessons and practicing discipline is very important.

Choose a study program that suits your current ability

In addition to the required course materials, students can learn more from other materials. If you have difficulty choosing appropriate materials, you can ask your teacher for more information.

Above are some reasons and some suggestions to answer the question that many generations of foreign language learners often ask: "Why am I studying forever but still not good at it?". Hopefully, you have somewhat recognized your weaknesses and chosen the appropriate solution to improve your English ability.
