Homophones are one of the traps that candidates often encounter in the Toeic test. People often use words with similar pronunciations to confuse listeners, especially in Part 1. In this part, there are often trap questions about words with similar pronunciations or different homophones such as walk/ work; bike/ hike. 1. Our and hour : /ˈaʊə(r)/
- This is our house. (This is our house.)
- He was waiting for you for over an hour. (He was waiting for you for over an hour.)
2. New and knew: /njuː/
- I love your new dress!
- I knew the answer as soon as she asked the question.
3. so (therefore) and sew (sewing) : /səʊ/
- It's raining, so you need to use your umbrella.
- Will you sew a button on this shirt for me please?
4. Allowed and aloud : /əˈlaʊd/
- You're not allowed to smoke in this office.
- When I was very young, my mum used to read aloud to me every night.
5. dessert /dɪˈzɜːt/ (dessert) and desert /ˈdezət/ (dessert)
- We are going to have apple pie for dessert.
- Have you ever been to the Sahara desert?
6. lose /luːz/ (lose, misplace) and loose /luːs/ (loose, wide)
- Did you lose your money?
- These pants are really loose on me. (These pants are really loose on me.)
7. buy (buy) and by (beside) : /baɪ/
- I need to buy some oranges.
- He put his phone by the television.
8. flower and flour : /ˈflaʊə(r)/
- He gives flowers to his girlfriend every day.
- We use flour to make cakes.
9. write and right : /raɪt/
- I am writing a letter to my parents.
- She always gives the right answers. (She always gives the right answers.)
10. son (son) and Sun (sun) : /sʌn/
- I have a son and a daughter. (I have a son and a daughter.)
- She is drawing the Sun. (She is drawing the Sun.)
