For students, one of the parts that they often get confused about when writing an argumentative essay is the introduction. Although this is not the main part of the essay, it is an indispensable part, contributing to highlighting the problem. Many students are still confused and spend a lot of time on this part.

We will guide you through some “tips” for writing an introduction. The article has 2 parts: Part 1 is general instructions, Part 2 is some tips for weak students.

I. General instructions

The introduction in an argumentative essay is the problem statement, usually in two ways:

– Direct: Is the way to go straight to the issue that needs to be discussed. That is, after studying the topic and finding the central issue of the essay, we state the issue directly with a clear thesis. However, when opening the essay directly, we must also present enough ideas, not missing but also not saying all the content, must meet all the requirements of a proper introduction in school. Raising the issue in a direct way is easy to do, quick, natural, easy to receive, but is often dry, rigid, and unattractive for the article.

If the topic requires a discussion about a work, the introduction must introduce the author's name, the work's name, quote a stanza, or introduce the topic of discussion.

– Indirect: With this method, the writer must lead into the topic by stating ideas related to the thesis (the issue to be discussed) to attract the reader’s attention and then move on to the thesis. Opening the essay in this way creates flexibility and fluidity for the essay, attracting the reader, however, this type of opening can easily lead to rambling and digression in the essay.

Weak students should open the essay in the first way (don't have to think much, but won't get good grades).

* Example 1

Topic: Discuss the concept of life.

- Direct opening:

In life, everyone has their own philosophy of life. Some people only live for money and fame, forgetting the true value of life. The concept of a good life is the harmony between fame, money, relationships and values of people with nature, not being dominated by material things, living to the fullest, working to the fullest. (Student's writing)

- Indirect introduction:

French writer D. Diderot once said, “If you don’t have a goal, you can’t do anything. You can’t do anything great if your goal is ordinary. This is a correct concept and very suitable for us. In life, everyone has their own ideal to reach, perfect and develop themselves. Everyone needs to create an ideal for themselves and have the determination to follow that ideal.” (Student’s article)

For literary essays, you do the same.

* Example 2

Topic :

Analysis of unique story situations in Kim Lan's The Beggar's Wife

– Direct opening:

“The Beggar’s Wife” is considered a masterpiece in Kim Lan’s writing career, and also an excellent short story of modern Vietnamese prose. One of the important factors that helps create unique ideological and artistic values for the short story is that Kim Lan successfully built a unique story situation.

- Indirect introduction:

For the art of short stories, creating a unique and novel situation to highlight the problem, the mood, thoughts, personalities of the characters and the theme of the work is a key point. A special short story is thanks to being organized around such a situation, and Kim Lan's The Beggar's Wife is a typical case.

* Example 3

+ When talking about Chinh Huu, we cannot help but mention the poem “Comrade”. The poem is like a bright spot in the collection “The Moon Hangs on the Gun Barrel” - his collection of poems about the subject of soldiers. (direct introduction)

+ Topic: Analyze the character Chi Pheo in the work of the same name by Nam Cao.

When Ngo Tat To's "Darkness" and Nguyen Cong Hoan's "The End of the Road" were published, I'm sure few people thought that the fate of farmers under the yoke of feudal imperialism could have any suffering greater than that of Chi Dau and Anh Pha. But when Chi Pheo stepped out of Nam Cao's books, people realized that this was the complete embodiment of what is called the most miserable and humiliating of the people in the same colonial country. The image of Chi Pheo through Nam Cao's work of the same name hauntingly depicted that image.

II. Tips for writing introductions for weak students

Below is a safe way to introduce an essay for weak students. This method is only applicable in the case of being nervous in the exam room and not being able to think of an introduction. Then take 5 minutes to memorize the available "templates". In the exam room, just change the name of the work, the name of the character, or the topic of discussion. Specifically, the following example of an introduction:

Nam Cao is a writer specializing in short stories. He was very successful in works that exploited the theme of people who were corrupted in the old society. One of his typical works is the short story "Chi Pheo". The work successfully depicts the portrait of the character Chi Pheo, an honest farmer who was pushed into the path of corruption.

You can use this introduction for many related works: for example
+ Kim Lan is a writer specializing in short stories. He has been very successful in works that exploit the theme of farmers in the old society. One of his typical works is the short story "The Picked-up Wife". The work successfully portrays the character of Mrs. Tu, a poor farmer mother with a kind heart....

+ Nguyen Tuan is a writer specializing in short stories. He has been very successful in works that exploit the theme of talented people in the old society. One of his typical works is the short story "The Prisoner's Calligraphy". The work successfully portrays the portrait of the character Huan Cao, an outstandingly talented person, with a pure spirit and conscience...

You can "create a series of similar introductions, including topics in other fields, for example: Huy Can is an excellent writer in the new poetry movement. He has been very successful in works that exploit the theme of the homeland's river landscape. One of his typical works is the poem "Tràng giang". The poem is inspired by the vast waves of the Red River...

So easy, right? Then let's write some sample introductions, to use in necessary situations.

Of course, Ad does not encourage you to plagiarize or copy, because literature does not accept that, but "in the end" you have to use these available templates (!!!).

Some available templates you can learn by heart:

1. Building a character image is difficult, but making that character have the power to move and capture the reader's heart is even more difficult. Yet the poet/writer... has done it. His character "ABC/XYZ" has left a deep impression on the reader's heart about the image of a (depending on the topic that requires analyzing which character, generalize that character)

2. Time still passes and the four seasons always rotate. People appear only once in life and also only once depart forever into eternity. But what is poetry, literature, and true art will remain forever with time.

The work “ABC/XYZ” by writer/poet….is one of such works of art.

Especially the excerpt….(if people ask for excerpt analysis)

3. The resistance war against America to save the country of our people has added golden pages to the history of the nation. Many literary works have been inspired by this theme. Therefore, this is also a period of literary success that contributes to the glory of the country's literature.

”…….” By writer/poet ……… is one such contribution.

The image of brave, resilient soldiers, fighting day and night to protect the country/ The main character in the work (name) … has truly left a deep impression on the reader’s heart (An introduction like this only applies to essays about war and soldiers), for example: Tay Tien,…

4. In every person’s heart, there is always a place reserved for the homeland, that feeling is passionate and burning with a strong, lasting vitality. Especially in difficult and dangerous circumstances, that feeling shines even brighter. With a sharp and realistic pen and a deeply sympathetic soul, many modern Vietnamese writers have successfully portrayed the image of Vietnamese people with a passionate love for their homeland. But perhaps the most successful is the writer…. With the character……..

5. We have encountered many tragic female fates in Vietnamese literary works, such as the unjustly accused Vu Nuong, the tragic Kieu, the resentful Chi Dau... But when approaching revolutionary literature, the same women of the past rise up strongly to take control of their own lives. One of the typical female literary characters is the character... of the writer/poet...

This applies to The Tale of Kieu, The Boat Out at Sea, and A Phu's Husband and Wife.

6. Among the countless victims of feudal society, there is a class that all humanitarian writers painfully respect and focus on writing about, that is women. Among the works written on this topic, the most prominent is the work….
