“Any major must be suitable to one’s abilities and strengths to maximize one’s potential. However, inappropriate guidance from students and their families makes many young people confused, without passion, without learning goals. This leads to high unemployment. To “end” the above situation, the school needs to “get involved” and orient students to careers based on their abilities and strengths right from the first steps and throughout their university journey.” That is the sharing of Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Van Hong – Principal of Dai Nam University.

"Disillusioned" because of choosing the wrong major

The National High School Exam is approaching, which is also the time when candidates rush to complete their applications and make decisions about choosing a school and major. However, not all candidates can determine the major that suits their abilities and strengths. Not to mention that many young people choose schools based on trends, rankings for “fancy” or “randomly” based on the majority, income level, taste, etc.

Family guidance is not always appropriate because parents do not understand what their children like or what career is suitable for them. Many parents guide their children according to their interests and family traditions even though those are not the careers that their children like or are suitable for.

According to a survey by a Human Resources Forecasting Center, the rate of students choosing the wrong major is 60%. Only about 5% have knowledge about the major they choose to study; 20% have relatively complete knowledge and 75% lack knowledge about the profession they choose to study.

The consequences of choosing the wrong major and lacking understanding of the field of study make students lose motivation to study; lose confidence in themselves; feel lethargic and have no development goals.

Candidates need to consider carefully when choosing a suitable major.

“If young people are naive and do not yet realize the importance of the profession, the school must provide guidance and inspire their passion. This will help students demonstrate their abilities, develop their talents and qualities, become valuable and contribute to society and the community,” Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Van Hong emphasized.

What has Dai Nam University done to orient students?

Firstly, Dai Nam University's team of consultants is always available 24/7 to enthusiastically support and answer students' questions during the process of learning about the school and the major. This helps students make the right judgments and choose the major that suits their abilities and strengths.

Second, students learn about the school and career orientation right in the first week of civic activities and meetings with new students of the Faculties with sharing and answers from school leaders, faculty leaders, teachers, students, alumni and businesses.

New students are oriented about the school and major during the first week of civic activities.

Medical students receive career guidance right at the freshman meeting.

Third, students are trained and developed in soft skills, self-understanding skills and personal branding right from the first year through the Soft Skills training program - a "specialty" of Dai Nam University.

Fourth, students discover their talents through activities such as: scientific research; participating in start-up classes; professional competitions; trying their hand at being an actor, director, fashion designer, etc. From there, they will have more orientation and new choices about their future careers.

DNU teachers and students participate in the program "Entrepreneurial Thinking".

Students are free to express their talents and creativity.

Fifth, the school regularly organizes talk shows and career seminars so that students can directly interact with businesses. From there, they can have a comprehensive view of the industry, job position, income level, business requirements, etc.

Sixth, Enterprises directly come to schools to train, supplement knowledge and skills (write CV, answer recruitment interviews, make plans, etc.), and provide career orientation for students.

Practice CV writing skills with experts.

Seventh, Dai Nam University expands strategic cooperation with large domestic and foreign enterprises and corporations to bring students to practice, intern, and participate in recruitment according to their major.

Dai Nam University signed a cooperation agreement with the Poland - Japan Information Technology Academy.

Students go on field trips to gain a comprehensive view of the industry.

Eighth, Establish and develop the "Student Employment and Entrepreneurship" Center to ensure that 100% of students are supported with jobs in their major after graduation.

Connecting businesses, organizing Job Fairs for students to apply according to their abilities, strengths, and majors. Businesses can both “assess” and orient and recruit suitable human resources.

Students are trained in CV writing and interview skills from their second year of university through the Advanced Soft Skills training program of the Faculty of Soft Skills Training and Development; register for the exam in the form of a direct interview with a business representative.

At the Job Fair, young people will choose a recruitment booth that suits their major and interests to submit their CV and participate in a 1:1 interview.

"Sweet fruit" when oriented to the right industry and career

Dai Nam University's agility in career orientation according to abilities and strengths helps students achieve many achievements in their careers.

Although he is a senior student, Ly Minh Luong - Pharmacy class 12.01 has taken on a management position at 115 Pharma Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company. The male student said: The knowledge, skills and correct orientation of the School are the motivation for me to try my best every day.

Minh Luong took on the role of manager while still in school.

Hoang Khac Cuong - a student of TA class 15.05, excellently defeated more than 100,000 strong opponents to enter the final round of the 7th English Talent Contest for students in the capital in 2023.

“It can be said that I can achieve the results today thanks in no small part to the teaching and guidance of the teachers of the English Language Department. Creative and innovative learning methods and clear career orientation help me gain more knowledge and skills to conquer the competition,” the male student said.

Khac Cuong "defeated" many opponents from the Diplomatic Academy, Hanoi University, Hanoi Pedagogical University... to rank 8th in the list of finalists.

Choosing the right major helped Vu Minh Son – IT class 13.02 have some great designs right in the classroom. Recently, the male student “introduced” a mini CNC engraving machine made from a computer DVD drive.

“Without the help and guidance from my teachers, I probably wouldn’t have been able to complete my design. I feel lucky to be able to study in a practical and real-world environment like Dai Nam University. I am confident that the level and skills of IT students at Dai Nam University are “formidable” compared to students from many other schools.”

Minh Son designed mini CNC engraving machine himself.

With an impressive performance at the DNU Career Fair 2023, Minh Son is the first IT student to receive a job offer from Media Bridge Vietnam Co., Ltd. This is a “sweet fruit” for the efforts of the male student in particular and the right orientation of Dai Nam University in career guidance for students in general.
