According to Dr. Bach Quoc Khanh, the blood reserve of the Central Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion as of the morning of April 6 was only over 8,000 units of blood. Of which, blood group A had less than 1,000 units left, and blood group AB had nearly 700 units left.

Faced with a severe blood shortage due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, many hospitals in Hanoi urgently call on people to participate in voluntary blood donation. Promoting the tradition of blood donation to save lives of teachers and students of Dai Nam University in recent years; this year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the school cannot organize as usual, the Board of Directors calls on all cadres, lecturers, employees, and students who are in good health to participate in voluntary blood donation at blood collection points in Hanoi.

The annual blood donation tradition of teachers and students of Dai Nam School was interrupted by the Covid-19 epidemic.

Severe blood shortage during Covid-19 pandemic

On average, the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion needs about 1,500 units of blood per day to meet the emergency and treatment needs of 180 hospitals in 26 provinces and cities in the Northern region. Blood type O alone needs at least nearly 700 units of blood per day. However, the amount of blood in the warehouse can only be maintained at 7,000 units, with blood type O accounting for only 30% of the total blood reserve.

Dai Nam Blood Donation has become an annual voluntary blood donation program of Dai Nam University.

Due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in the past two consecutive months, the amount of blood received by the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion has decreased significantly. In March 2020 alone, the Institute received only 16,000 units of blood, while this number in previous years was 32,000 - 36,000 units. In particular, in the past few consecutive weeks, the Institute has only received 50 - 60 units of blood/day because there are almost no blood donation schedules at agencies, schools, residential areas, etc.

Responding to the press, Dr. Bach Quoc Khanh - Director of the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion said that never before has the Youth Month and National Voluntary Blood Donation Day (April 7) had such a low amount of blood received.

Teachers and students of Dai Nam University participate in the voluntary blood donation program - Red Sunday 2016.

Every year, Dai Nam Rose Drop receives the participation of a large number of cadres, lecturers, staff and students inside and outside the school.

Donating blood is safe during the epidemic, why not?

Voluntary blood donation is one of the ways to “rescue” the blood shortage, bringing a chance to live to patients in need of blood. Accordingly, if young people from 18 to 25 years old donate blood 4 times a year, the whole country will have enough blood for emergency and treatment. If women from 18 to 55 years old and men from 18 to 60 years old donate blood 2 times a year, there will be enough blood for treatment and emergency.

Many students participated in voluntary blood donation in the Dai Nam Red Drops program 2019.

With the message “Donating blood is giving life”; “Giving blood, life stays”, the Dai Nam Red Drop program every year receives the attention and response of a large number of staff, lecturers and students inside and outside the school. Typically in 2019, on the first day, Dai Nam teachers and students collected 500 units of blood. Not only contributing to solving the blood shortage, bringing life opportunities to patients in need of blood, the school's annual voluntary blood donation program also aims to educate the spirit of mutual love, showing the kindness and noble deeds in each staff, lecturer and student of the school…” Ms. Cao Thi Hoa - Vice Principal shared.

Promoting the spirit of mutual love and the tradition of donating blood to save lives of teachers and students of Dai Nam University in recent years, the Board of Directors calls on all cadres, lecturers, staff and students with good health to participate in voluntary blood donation during the epidemic season.
