DNU Medical Students “camp out” at the hospital, attend clinical classes all day and work nights like real doctors

“Medical students of Dai Nam University are treated equally and given all the same conditions as medical students of public schools. There is absolutely no discrimination when students come to Xanh-Pon Hospital for clinical practice…” That was the affirmation of Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Ngoc Son – Deputy Director of Xanh-Pon General Hospital at the reception of medical students of Dai Nam University for clinical practice at the hospital on the morning of March 13.
"Standing down" to practice at the hospital and working nights like a real doctor
Saint Paul General Hospital accepts medical students from Dai Nam University for internship.
Ha Dong General Hospital is a strategic partner and practice hospital for students majoring in Health.
Training a team of dynamic, professional, skilled, and highly responsible general practitioners is the motto of Dai Nam University. Accordingly, the University is constantly expanding strategic cooperation with leading hospitals across the country, promoting the Institute-School training model; sending students to practice and intern at hospitals; directly examining, diagnosing, and treating patients...
In particular, medical students of Dai Nam University will be stationed at the hospital, attending clinical classes all day and working nights like real doctors instead of only attending clinical classes in the morning like students of other schools. This helps students have more time to interact with patients, and have more opportunities to practice clinical skills and medical ethics.
Associate Professor, PhD, Associate Professor Hoang Duc Hanh on behalf of the school "entrusted" the students.
Implementing the medical training plan, the leaders of the Faculty of Medicine and teachers sent K14 medical students to 2 first-class hospitals in Hanoi, the Saint Paul General Hospital and the Ha Dong General Hospital, for clinical practice. 89 students were divided into 04 groups of basic internal medicine and basic surgery interns, rotating at both hospitals for 12 weeks (6 weeks at Saint Paul General Hospital, 6 weeks at Ha Dong General Hospital).
Associate Professor, Doctor, Senior Lecturer Hoang Duc Hanh - Head of the Faculty of Medicine said: Clinical practice at the hospital is necessary for students to experience the real working environment, understand the hospital's operating procedures, learn and be trained by a team of experienced doctors; thereby helping them to improve their knowledge, practice medical ethics to become good doctors, responsible to the community.
“I hope you will take advantage of the clinical internship opportunity to practice your profession, train yourself, and accumulate experience for yourself; leaving a good image of hard-working and dynamic Dai Nam University students in the eyes of teachers, doctors and patients at hospitals.”
The excitement and anticipation of future doctors.
There is no distinction between public and private school students when it comes to clinical internships at hospitals.
Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Ngoc Son - Deputy Director of Xanh-Pon General Hospital said: Dai Nam University is the first non-public school to send students to clinical practice at Xanh-Pon General Hospital. However, there is no distinction between students from public schools and non-public schools. Medical students from Dai Nam University will be treated equally with students from other schools.
“We are committed to creating all favorable conditions for medical students of Dai Nam University to study and practice; ensuring that after completing the internship period, students will have useful professional experiences, meeting the requirements of the curriculum that teachers have dedicatedly built,” said Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Ngoc Son.
Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Ngoc Son shares with students.
During the internship, students will be divided into small groups (2-3 students/group) to directly monitor the progress of patients in the wards and participate in after-hours duty with medical staff of the departments.
Here, students will be taught in the following forms: Morning meetings, instructions on medical/surgical medical records and medical/surgical medical records on specific patients in groups (20-25 students/group), and going to the ward to learn how to examine and detect symptoms of disease on specific patients in small groups (10-13 students/group).
Students are taught patient care skills such as: measuring vital signs, clearing airways, giving oxygen, feeding patients through nasogastric tubes, catheterization, enemas, changing bandages, removing surgical stitches, etc. under the supervision and support of teachers and medical staff of the department.
After the internship, students will master the following skills: taking medical history, examining to detect clinical symptoms, analyzing test results; writing medical records and skillfully performing patient care techniques.
Students are divided into departments and have hospital staff directly instruct them.
Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Ngoc Son advised students: “During the practice, you should proactively interact with patients to understand their medical history and condition. When you gain the trust of patients, you will easily examine and care for them. Do not hesitate to ask doctors, nurses, and caregivers when you have questions or concerns. In particular, medicine is a lifelong profession, so you need to actively research and discuss with teachers and friends to update your knowledge…”
Nguyen Thi Anh Duong - student of class YK 14-01 shared: "Although I have learned theory and practiced quite well on models and simulated patients at school, I still feel nervous when I go to the hospital, standing in front of real doctors and patients. However, the thoughtfulness of the teachers and the warm welcome of the hospital help me feel less stressed. I will try my best to absorb the knowledge that the teachers teach and apply it to practice in the most standard way".
Future doctors are ready to enter their first clinical internship.
