Success has no LUCK or COST

-Dr. Le Dac Son, statistics show that 80% of the poor in society do not have any post-secondary education; 90% of the rich have a university education or higher. What do you think about these numbers?

In life, the opportunity to get rich is always shared equally among everyone. Real estate prices, stock prices, gold prices, jobs, business opportunities, investments... all come naturally and exist in the market like the air we breathe every day, everyone has the right to grasp. The important thing is, who has enough knowledge and courage to recognize and seize the opportunity? Reality shows that only those with knowledge and basic training can quickly recognize opportunities, realize opportunities and become rich and successful.

The above statistics reflect very accurately the nature and impact of knowledge on human life. Human success does not depend on luck or misfortune. In reality, there are many cases of people suddenly becoming rich overnight, such as: winning the lottery, winning gambling, being compensated for land... However, most of them cannot keep the money. Many cases return to their original state after a short time because they do not have the knowledge to manage that sudden wealth. People who become rich because of winning the lottery will continue to buy lottery tickets until they run out of money; people who become rich because of gambling will continue to sink deeper into gambling; people who are compensated for land will quickly spend all the compensation money by building houses or partying...

-Many people think that to be successful in life, it is not necessary to go to university. What is your opinion on this issue?

Only through learning can people have enough knowledge to integrate and develop with society.

University is not the only way to study; a university degree does not guarantee anyone a more comfortable life if that person does not try, does not make an effort to study and accumulate knowledge. However, going to university is a great competitive advantage. University gives us the opportunity and the best conditions to access basic knowledge, to keep up with modern life. A university degree is an important passport that takes you to domestic and international agencies, businesses, and organizations. We must understand that university is knowledge, not just a degree.

Cases of people who did not go to college but still succeeded like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs are very rare. They are more of an AQ-style encouragement for those who did not go to college, not a constructive example for young people to follow.

What is college for?

-Dr. Le Dac Son, many young people go to university but do not determine the purpose of their university studies. So, in your opinion, what is the purpose of studying at university?

If high school teaches culture, lifestyle, how to be a human and basic knowledge to integrate into society, then university teaches how to think, how to develop knowledge to solve work at a high level, not only enough to make a living but also to enrich oneself, one's family and contribute to society in a sustainable way.

University gives young people the best opportunities and conditions to access knowledge and integrate into modern life.

Nowadays, agencies and businesses still value degrees. But for them, a university, master's, or doctorate degree is just a passport for you to be interviewed for a job. If you can do the job, that degree is valuable. On the contrary, if you can't do the job, that degree is meaningless. Many people have many degrees but they can't do anything worthwhile with those degrees in their whole life because they only study for a degree to get promoted; the degrees are real but fake. Many people only have a basic bachelor's or engineer degree, but because they study anytime, anywhere, and for life, they develop their working ability, management ability, and succeed in life.

Learning goes hand in hand with practice, linking training with real life is the motto of Dai Nam University.

Is it pitiful or blameworthy for unemployed graduates?

-Dr. Le Dac Son, in recent years, the press has continuously reported on the situation of unemployed bachelors and masters who “suspend their degrees” and go to work as factory workers. In your opinion, what is the cause of this situation?

Vietnam’s university and post-graduate education system is heavily focused on academic theory and lacks practical application. As a result, it produces generations of bachelors, masters, and doctors who lack professional knowledge, foreign languages, and work skills. As someone working in the education sector, I am deeply saddened to hear these statistics.

Right from the first year, Dai Nam students have had the opportunity to visit, practice, intern and work at businesses.

The education system is to blame, but the students are not innocent. Bachelors and masters “hang their degrees” and go to work as factory workers because they lack professional knowledge, work skills, and practical experience. 4 or 5 years of studying at university, passively approaching knowledge, not making an effort to learn, not being proactive in experiencing, just running around to get a degree and hoping to graduate and get a government job for life. When they cannot get into the government, they struggle to go to businesses but are unable to work, and the inevitable consequence is unemployment. Those unemployed bachelors and masters are more to blame than to pity.

With the practical hotel model, students of the Faculty of Tourism of Dai Nam University have the opportunity to practice at 3-star, 4-star and 5-star hotels managed and operated by the school.

-So, to create generations of global citizens who can meet the requirements of domestic and foreign employers, in what direction should Vietnamese higher education innovate, Doctor?

A degree is only a proof of a stage of human learning, while learning is a long-term process. Each individual needs to clearly define their learning goals and make constant efforts towards that goal. Learning a lot is different from getting a lot of degrees; real learning is not linked to degrees; learning a lot is not only for the purpose of becoming a professor, doctor, to have a high salary coefficient, but learning a lot to have a lot of knowledge to serve the purpose of making a living and finding success. In the digital age, students can learn anytime, anywhere without being limited by space and time.

Theory and academic knowledge are necessary but not enough for a citizen of the 21st century. If you only have theory, no skills, no experience, businesses will certainly not choose you.

Professional knowledge, information technology, foreign languages and soft skills are factors that every business needs, while the training programs of universities are lacking. The State needs to have policies and leverage mechanisms for universities to promote autonomy, innovation and creativity in teaching; educational institutions must be truly reformed to provide education with more HEART and VISION.
