“Medicine is a special profession. The starting point to enter the Faculty of Medicine is to be an excellent student with a high entrance score. However, that is only a necessary condition.

What medical students need to become good doctors is not only intelligence and wisdom, but especially in times of pandemic like this, they must have a kind heart, honesty and courage... to be able to pursue medicine and the medical profession to the end."

That is the special emphasis of Associate Professor, Dr., Senior Lecturer Hoang Duc Hanh - Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dai Nam University in a letter sent to medical students on the first day of returning to school to study in person after a long period of online learning due to the epidemic.

Associate Professor, Dr. Hoang Duc Hanh - Head of the Faculty of Medicine, Dai Nam University, former Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Health.

Dear medical students of Dai Nam University!

After 2 years of online learning due to the pandemic, today, Dai Nam University Medical students are finally able to go to school to study in person. Seeing you all looking so fresh in your pure white blouses; your bright, radiant faces; your intelligent, energetic eyes, I am very touched and proud! I want to write a few words to you - the future doctors!

Dear children!

Our Faculty of Medicine was established on July 1, 2016. Up to now, we are proud to have a strong Faculty of Medicine, fully converging the best conditions in terms of training programs, human resources, facilities, equipment... meeting all the strict requirements of the Ministry of Education and Training, the Ministry of Health on training General Practitioners.

The Faculty of Medicine has a large and enthusiastic teaching staff.

Participating in teaching the Medical training program at Dai Nam University are 35 teachers who are permanent lecturers, including 01 Professor, 05 Associate Professors, 08 PhDs, 21 Masters, and Specialist II Doctors. In addition, we also have teachers from the Faculty of Pharmacy and Nursing teaching general subjects and 50 guest lecturers who are lecturers from major Medical and Pharmaceutical universities, such as: Hanoi Medical University, University of Medicine and Pharmacy - VNU, Military Medical Academy, Thai Nguyen Medical University... and doctors working at Central and Hanoi hospitals.

As you know, our school is very large (nearly 14 hectares, both campuses) and is in the process of completing the second phase of the school complex. Outside of class, I hope you will take some time to visit the areas around the school, first of all the faculty offices and the system of lecture halls, practice rooms, laboratories, skinlabs... that meet the standards of your faculty.

Studying Medicine requires a lot of self-study. The school library is an ideal place for students not only to study and research (with more than 5,000 books; 1.2 million documents, lectures, electronic textbooks, including more than 1,000 textbooks/learning materials for medical training; in particular, medical textbooks and documents will be updated annually, purchased in advance of each semester, and provided free of charge to students) but also a place to rest and relax after stressful study hours. Students should take advantage of this wonderful academic space right now!

In addition, the school also has common areas, such as: 03 Halls; Dormitory; National defense and security training area; 03 soccer fields, 01 basketball court, 01 badminton court, gymnasium... With such facilities, I hope that students will take advantage of time to exercise outside of school hours to stay healthy, both to study and to live safely with the pandemic.

Dear students!

Practice and reality are vital factors to train a good doctor. During the study at the Faculty of Medicine, students will have the opportunity to practice at many of the School's affiliated practice hospitals, such as: Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, National Children's Hospital, Bach Mai Hospital, E Hospital, Central Obstetrics Hospital, Xanh Pon Hospital, Thanh Nhan Hospital, Hanoi Heart Hospital, Ha Dong General Hospital, Dong Anh General Hospital, Soc Son General Hospital and Central Psychiatric Hospital. Currently, the School is continuing to connect with hospitals to expand the system of practice hospitals for medical students.

With adequate facilities, equipment, learning materials...; advanced and updated training programs; scientific learning organization methods; large central and Hanoi practice hospital systems; a team of highly qualified, experienced, passionate and enthusiastic lecturers with students, I confidently affirm to you that: "The Faculty of Medicine of Dai Nam University is not inferior to any medical training institution in the country."

The training facilities are not inferior to any school.

After 6 years of training, General Practitioners of Dai Nam University will have sufficient knowledge of basic science and solid basic medicine, have basic knowledge and skills in clinical and community, combine modern medicine with traditional medicine, have foreign language proficiency, have vision and capacity for scientific research, have the ability to access and apply scientific achievements in medicine in protecting and taking care of people's health to confidently work at treatment facilities as doctors directly participating in treatment; training facilities as managers and lecturers; research institutes as specialists and managers; State management agencies and non-governmental organizations on health as specialists and managers...

Dear children!

Identifying English as a competitive “weapon” for students after graduation, as the key for them to expand their knowledge, Dai Nam University especially invests in foreign language training for medical students (the cost is 4 times higher than other majors). Why is that? Because only by being good at English can students regularly update the rapid changes of modern medicine; only then can they study and research to improve their knowledge and professional skills to promptly treat serious illnesses for the people...

In addition, students are also professionally trained in vocational skills, soft skills, and positive attitudes to ensure knowledge goes hand in hand with skills and attitudes - indispensable factors that ensure a person's lifelong success.

Practice is the key to becoming a good doctor.

Dear students!

As a teacher, a senior with more than 40 years of experience in the profession, I would like to share and advise you that: Right from when you are still in school , be persistent and patient in pursuing to the end the goal you have chosen, which is to become a doctor who is passionate about the profession, has a high sense of responsibility, has a good observational mind and a kind heart to feel and share the pain, anxiety and burden that patients and their relatives are suffering. In particular, you must be strong and courageous because the medical profession is not for the "faint-hearted"...

In addition to intelligence, medical students need more than anything a kind heart.

Studying medicine is very hard, the training program is “heavy”, the study time is long (6 years). The study intensity is high, not to mention the need to practice across time at the hospital... Graduation is not enough, you also have to study for 18 more months of practice to be granted a “Certificate of Practice” to become a real doctor. You must understand the mission of saving people in the medical profession, so any mistake, no matter how small, can affect the patient's life... This requires you to be really diligent, hardworking, patient, hard-working, and enduring to be able to absorb knowledge and must form the professional skills of a doctor right from the beginning of your studies. Forming a conditioned reflex that a delay, a carelessness or laziness can have serious consequences.

Besides, doctors need to be honest so as not to deceive patients, colleagues and themselves.

All of these things will be trained, nurtured and developed every day during the 6 years of study at school.

Teachers and students of the Faculty of Medicine on the first day of school.

The last thing I want to share with you is that you can be completely confident in your intellectual foundation and ability, and proud to be among the medical students of Dai Nam University because as I said above, the Faculty of Medicine of Dai Nam University is not inferior to other medical training institutions in the country. Therefore, you absolutely must not have an inferiority complex but must firmly believe in your choice, rest assured and make constant efforts in studying and training so that after 6 years of studying at the Faculty of Medicine of Dai Nam University, you will become good doctors, rich in virtue, contributing to the care and protection of people's health, meeting the expectations and pride of your family, clan, teachers and the School!

I wish you success!

Friendly!

Associate Professor, Dr. Hoang Duc Hanh - Head of the Faculty of Medicine, Dai Nam University
