The medical field requires a lot of qualities and effort from students. In particular, to graduate on time and achieve strict output standards in knowledge - skills - attitudes, students need to have the right and effective learning methods right from the start.

At the recent "Symposium on Learning Methods for Medical Students" organized by the Faculty of Medicine of Dai Nam University, students were shared with leading experts in the medical field, former resident physicians (BSNT) of Hanoi Medical University about learning methods and experiences and given many useful advices.

"Seminar on Learning Methods for Medical Students" was held online, attracting great attention from many students.

Speaking at the opening of the seminar, Associate Professor, Dr. Hoang Duc Hanh - Head of the Faculty of Medicine, Dai Nam University, especially emphasized: "Studying at university is very different from high school. Especially, with a difficult, specific major with a huge amount of knowledge like Medicine, without the right learning method, it will be very difficult for you to pursue this major to the end. Only by changing your learning method can you become a good medical student..."

05 active learning methods that medical students can apply from year 1 to year 6

At the Seminar, Ms. Ta Thi Thanh Phuong - Lecturer of Pediatrics Department, Faculty of Medicine, Dai Nam University shared about effective learning methods of Medicine applied to students from first year to sixth year. Accordingly, she especially emphasized on methods such as: Self-study, active listening to lectures, effective note-taking, group study and learning by doing.

Ms. Ta Thi Thanh Phuong - Lecturer of Pediatrics Department shares methods for effective learning in Medicine.

For each method, Ms. Ta Thi Thanh Phuong has detailed and specific explanations with typical practical examples to help students easily visualize, follow and apply effectively to each subject.

“The knowledge accumulated this semester is the foundation for the following semesters. 6 years of studying medicine is a long journey, going through many hardships and difficulties, but if you have passion, aspiration, will and have appropriate and effective learning methods, you will definitely achieve good results…” , Ms. Ta Thi Thanh Phuong advised.

To help students, especially K15 students, have an overview of the medical field; understand the characteristics and differences of the medical field compared to other fields of study; thereby determining the motivation, purpose and correct learning method from the beginning, Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Trung Kien - Assistant to the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Medical Department of Dai Nam University shared with students about teaching and learning medicine - its characteristics and differences.

Studying just to pass a subject is like practicing... "murder" later on.

That is the sharing of the "seniors" with students who are pursuing the medical major at Dai Nam University. Doctor Nguyen Trong Thanh - Doctor of Pediatrics at Hanoi Medical University, currently working at the National Children's Hospital, had interesting sharing with students about effective learning methods to overcome 3 common problems of medical students: quick learning, passive learning and repeating old behaviors.

“The best way to remember knowledge is to repeat it every day. However, you need to have a scientific way of repeating it. Read and reread intermittently to absorb and remember knowledge thoroughly. Besides, you should take advantage of lectures and videos available on the internet to study,” Dr. Nguyen Trong Thanh shared.

Doctor Nguyen Trong Thanh shares his learning experiences with students.

According to Dr. Thanh, medical students should absolutely avoid the “test effect – exam effect” during their studies. That is, do not wait until the last minute to jump, do not study just to pass the subject because medicine is a special field, any mistakes must be paid for with the health and life of the patient, not with money.

The concept of public-private no longer exists in healthcare recruitment.

At the Seminar, in addition to the issue of learning methods, Dai Nam Medical students were especially interested in practical recruitment requirements and how to demonstrate their abilities as the first batch of medical students at a private training institution.

Responding to the question, Dr. Bui Thi Hoai Thu - a Rehabilitation Specialist at Hanoi Medical University, currently working at Bach Mai Hospital, said: “When I went to study Physical Therapy and applied for a job, the teachers never asked me which school I attended, what kind of university degree I had, but only asked me what I could do and what my outstanding strengths were. The same was true when working at the hospital. The leaders only cared about the doctor's ability, teamwork skills with colleagues, and communication skills with patients and their families. The concept of public-private relations has long since ceased to exist in recruitment in the health sector…”

Also being the first batch of students of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy - VNU, Dr. Bui Thi Hoai Thu also experienced confusion and doubt about the training capacity of the teachers, the school as well as herself. In particular, she was confused when someone accidentally asked "why study medicine here and not there".

Doctor Bui Thi Hoai Thu shares with Dai Nam Medical students.

“After all, I realized that 6 years of university are just the basic foundation, a very small part to practice. Your goal now is to learn the basics well first, and the basics are the same everywhere… Dai Nam University is a dynamic environment, with advantages in English and soft skills. You should know how to take advantage of that advantage to study and compete later…” Dr. Bui Thi Hoai Thu advised.
