How to apply ChatGPT to DNU to bring high efficiency in learning?

“ChatGPT is not a threat to education. On the contrary, ChatGPT can become a learning support tool for students and can be completely applied at Dai Nam University…”. That is the opinion of Dr. Dau Hai Phong - Deputy Head of Information Technology Department, Dai Nam University in the Workshop “ChatGPT Technology and its Impact on Teaching and Learning”.
The workshop was organized by the Faculty of Information Technology of Dai Nam University, with the participation of: Board of Directors; leaders of faculties; staff, lecturers of Departments, Offices, Faculties and many scientists, lecturers from outside units, people interested in this topic via livestream on the fanpage DNU-Faculty of Information Technology.
At the workshop, Dr. Dau Hai Phong presented an overview report on ChatGPT technology, its impacts on teaching and learning, and how it is applied at Dai Nam University.
Dr. Dau Hai Phong believes that ChatGPT will not become a threat to education if it is exploited properly.
Is ChatGPT a Threat to Education?
ChatGPT was tested right at the conference. Accordingly, this artificial intelligence application is capable of answering any question that the user raises, and can even write an essay on any requested topic in just a few minutes, a few seconds.
This has many scientists concerned that AI will negatively impact teaching and learning. Students can use ChatGPT to cheat in their studies. Misuse of AI also hinders learning, takes away motivation to work, and stunts students' creativity and critical thinking.
However, Dr. Dau Hai Phong said: ChatGPT is not a threat to education because this system is not completely accurate. This application can only predict based on the huge amount of data it is trained on. Therefore, it can give wrong or incorrect answers, without any source to prove the results.
ChatGPT gives wrong answer.
This AI tool is also not suitable for tasks that require logic, specialized knowledge, or up-to-date information. ChatGPT can help students answer theoretical questions well. But when it comes to practical application questions, this AI still cannot help students give convincing answers.
For the IT field, ChatGPT can only write simple code, but for specialized programs, this application also has to "struggle" with data and return inaccurate results.
Another reason why ChatGPT is not a threat to education is language. First of all, ChatGPT works better when the questioner uses English instead of Vietnamese. Second, students who want to use ChatGPT well must be able to analyze and evaluate information to determine whether ChatGPT's answers are correct or incorrect. However, this is a weakness of most Vietnamese students.
Cannot ban students from using ChatGPT
At the Workshop, scientists agreed with the view: It is impossible to prohibit students from using ChatGPT. Instead, schools need to take advantage of the capabilities of this application to improve teaching and learning efficiency.
According to Dr. Can Thi Cuc - Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, using ChatGPT in the medical field is not high due to the specialization of the field of study. Above all, this field of study also requires high animation and practice instead of the usual theory. However, medical students can still use ChatGPT to look up information, learn languages, presentation methods, etc.
ChatGPT can be applied to Dai Nam University.
Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Thi Lien - Vice Principal, Head of the Faculty of Business Administration said that it is necessary to change the method of learning assessment; to avoid the situation where students just copy-paste the solutions of ChatGPT without understanding anything.
Dr. Tran Dang Cong - Head of Information Technology Department also expressed his opinion: " Applying ChatGPT to teaching and learning activities is the right thing to do. However, we must warn students that this is only an information search tool and the answers it provides are not completely accurate. Therefore, students must learn more from other official data sources."
How should DNU deal with ChatGPT?
From the frank and open opinions and sharing of scientists, the Workshop has drawn out the method of applying ChatGPT at Dai Nam University to bring about the best teaching and learning results.
For teachers, ChatGPT can be used to support teaching basic content and general knowledge. From there, teachers have the opportunity to spend more time on specialized, in-depth content.
At the same time, teachers can use ChatGPT to create question banks, create responsibility questions and exercises for different subjects; search for ideas, create learning inspiration; create basic texts for classroom activities... Besides, guide students to use it properly to improve writing skills, presentation skills; learn languages; and know how to systematize and filter received data sources.
For students, ChatGPT helps students improve their writing skills by comparing their own written texts with ChatGPT's sample answers; searching and synthesizing information; finding ideas and basic content of classroom activities. Students can also use ChatGPT to improve their language learning.
However, to avoid students cheating with ChatGPT, it is necessary to: Change the way of giving questions with more analytical, argumentative and academic questions instead of just giving purely theoretical and research questions. If you need to remember knowledge, you can conduct an oral test.
For subjects that require thinking development such as programming, students are still required to program in class. However, the testing process will disconnect all Internet connections and be closely supervised by the lecturer.
Students can use ChatGPT to look up information, learn how to write, and how to present in their studies. However, it is not recommended to use this AI tool in class discussions to avoid students being lazy to think and relying on ChatGPT.
The workshop provided an overview of ChatGPT for staff and lecturers of Dai Nam University. The results of the workshop showed that ChatGPT can completely become a tool to support teaching and learning. However, more research, analysis, evaluation, combined with small-scale testing, and comprehensive evaluation of effectiveness are needed before considering replication and official application at Dai Nam University.
