Number of applications for admission to 15 "hottest" university majors in 2021

On the afternoon of May 18, the Department of Higher Education - Ministry of Education and Training informed the number of candidates registering for university admission in 2021 in 15 training groups.

Below are the statistics of the wishes of 15 out of 24 groups of majors enrolling in 2021 from the Department of Higher Education - Ministry of Education and Training.

According to the above statistics, the entire system has over 3.8 million applications for admission to universities and colleges with nearly 550,000 targets.

If we calculate the total number of wishes above the quota, the number of wishes is more than 7 times the quota. But if we calculate the total number of candidates registering for the first wish, it is only 1.45 times higher than the total quota of the whole system.

According to the Department of Higher Education, to assess the situation and trend of major registration in 2021, it is necessary to base on the data of registration of the first choice because the first choice (NV1) represents the first priority, the desired major, the first choice of candidates. Only when failing NV1, students start choosing other majors through the second and third choices.

Comparing the NV1/quota ratio shows that the hottest majors with the most candidates registered this year are: National Security and Defense (566.82%); Journalism and Information (311.65%), Arts (210.7%); Hotel and Tourism, Personal Services (201%), Social and Behavioral Sciences (197.97%).

Of the total number of wishes, the Business Management group has the highest registration rate (32.77%), but when considering the first wish, this group only accounts for 186.1%, ranking 6th among the groups that attract the most candidates. That shows that this group is chosen by many candidates for the next wishes, if NV1 is not passed.

Meanwhile, the service and information press industries are "on the rise", while National Security and Defense still maintains its attractiveness to candidates. Notably, the Education Science and Teacher Training industry has a high rate of registration wishes (Top 9).

The Department of Higher Education reminds candidates that in these "hot" majors, the level of competition will be high, and the possibility of admission will be more difficult than in other majors. This is a risk and challenge that students applying for these majors need to pay close attention to.

In addition, the Government's issuance and guidance on the implementation of Decree 116 on ordering teacher training, with preferential policies to support pedagogical students with tuition and living expenses, and ensuring output after graduation, has also brought more attraction to the pedagogical industry.

On the contrary, the least attractive majors (based on first choice) are Life Sciences (26%) and Natural Sciences (20.1%). This is completely understandable because these are basic science majors, with low demand for human resources and are always considered boring.
