Opportunities and challenges of medical students at Dai Nam University

Faced with the shortage of high-quality human resources working in the field of health care and protection, the Ministry of Education and Training has licensed a number of universities with sufficient capacity to train in the field of Medicine, including Dai Nam University. This has helped young people with a passion for Medicine have more prestigious addresses to entrust their dreams. However, opportunities are only a small part, how to overcome challenges is the problem. In this article, Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Trung Kien - Assistant to the Chairman of the Board of Dai Nam University on Medicine, Vice President of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy - VNU will help you find the answer.
“GOLDEN” LEARNING OPPORTUNITY FOR DAI NAM MEDICAL STUDENTS
The goal of training human resources in the medical industry is to learn the profession, learn the methodology and most importantly, learn to be a health care provider. To achieve that training goal, medical students need a very long training period, not only in university but also lifelong learning. The 6-year training process at university only equips medical students with the basic knowledge and skills of a doctor. After graduation, doctors have the choice of a specialty that will follow them throughout their later years of practice.
The school and teachers' support throughout 6 years of university
To achieve the goal of becoming a doctor in the future, medical students of Dai Nam University are given many opportunities. In addition to the spiritual and material support of their families, they always have the companionship of the school and teachers during their years of study at school.
Experience a dynamic, modern learning environment
Dai Nam University especially prioritizes investing in the best for the Faculty of Medicine. The school has equipped the Faculty with a system of national standard practice rooms, meeting the learning requirements of students. In particular, Dai Nam built a Pre-clinical Center for students to learn clinical skills before practicing at the hospital.
Students are provided with free textbooks and learning materials by the school, and can use the electronic lecture system and a rich source of digital learning materials at the school library.
Priority is given to English training with a budget 4 times higher than other industries.
Identifying English as a competitive “weapon” for medical students after graduation, Dai Nam University has made special investments in English training for medical students (the cost is 4 times higher than other majors).
Specifically, students are tested for English proficiency upon entry and divided into classes according to their level. The training program not only ensures that students pass the English output standard but also receive advanced English training for future study, research and work.
Study with elite faculty
During their studies, Dai Nam University Medical students are taught by many teachers with Associate Professor and Doctorate degrees who have many years of training experience at prestigious medical universities in Vietnam. Accompanying the students are also homeroom teachers and academic advisors who are ready to share and help with difficulties and obstacles in studying and life.
Experience – maximum practice during the learning process
Solid basic knowledge will be very convenient for students when studying specialized subjects later, especially clinical applications. Basic knowledge subjects are basically no different from other schools, but the content of the Faculty of Medicine subjects focuses on applications and situations for students to apply basic knowledge to interpret the results of paraclinical tests.
In particular, medical students at Dai Nam University have early access to paraclinical techniques, such as: Electrocardiogram, Electroencephalogram, Respiratory function measurement, Electromyography, Blood biochemistry analysis, Blood bacteria...
- Preclinical study: Dai Nam University has a Preclinical center with many models and equipment to ensure that students can fully practice clinical skills before doing internships at the hospital.
- Clinical study: Competency standards for general practitioners after graduation are to be able to diagnose and differentiate common diseases (according to the international classification of diseases ICD10). The medical training program is designed with 198 credits (not including Physical Education, National Defense and Security Education). The program is built with 155 credits of professional education knowledge, of which the knowledge block by industry group is 8 credits, the knowledge block by industry and supplementary is 147 credits (the core modules of the medical industry are internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology and pediatrics account for 79 credits).
Learn clinical practice and "stay" at leading hospitals in Vietnam
The biggest difference of the Medical Department at Dai Nam University is the training organization. Currently, medical students only study clinical in the morning at the hospital, the time to contact with patients is very little, so there are not many opportunities to practice clinical skills. Therefore, at Dai Nam University, when studying clinical subjects (from the second semester of the third year), after studying theory at school, medical students will go to "camp" at hospitals, such as: Viet Duc Hospital, National Children's Hospital, National Maternity Hospital, Bach Mai Hospital, Hanoi Heart Hospital, Xanh-Pon Hospital, Central Psychiatric Hospital, Ha Dong General Hospital, Thanh Nhan Hospital... Students go to clinical in the morning and afternoon (not including night shift at least 01 session/week).
In addition, students will also participate in scientific research with teachers from the first years of the course.
Experience diverse and useful extracurricular activities
Students are able to participate in many extracurricular activities and volunteer activities of the school, such as: participating in disease prevention when being recruited, volunteering to examine and treat patients in difficult areas, charity cakes, donating blood... Through these experiences, medical students of Dai Nam University have more opportunities to experience reality and cultivate professional attitudes and ethics.
Attractive scholarship opportunities
Dai Nam University grants Talent Encouragement scholarships worth 50% - 100% of the first semester tuition fee of the first year to students who are admitted, complete enrollment and have the highest total score of 03 high school graduation exam subjects according to the admission combination.
In 2021, the Faculty of Medicine at Dai Nam University with scores of 27 or higher will be awarded a Talent Encouragement scholarship with a tuition reduction of 50% - 100%.
From the second semester onwards, students are considered for academic encouragement scholarships or high-quality class scholarships according to the school's annual scholarship fund.
CHALLENGES TO CONQUER
However, for medical students in the 4.0 era, besides opportunities, there are also many challenges.
The impact of the environment on health and disease, population movement - tourism, socio-economic development, the appearance of new emerging diseases greatly change the disease pattern of the people.
In addition, the increase in the number of students in training institutions, changes in awareness of health and illness, and the personal freedom of patients... make it increasingly difficult for students to interact with patients to practice their profession.
Another challenge for medical students is the constant development of medical science. Much of today's knowledge will become obsolete tomorrow. Diagnosis and treatment techniques change every day, requiring students to have foreign language proficiency and knowledge of information technology to be able to update new knowledge of the world.
In addition, the development of the market mechanism, the diversity of medical services (public and private), some practicing physicians are too dependent on paraclinical in diagnosing and treating diseases... also have an impact on medical students, making them not aware of the importance of learning clinical skills. Another reality is that in recent years, the outbreak of epidemics, the silent sacrifice of medical staff, and the degeneration of some medical staff have also had a significant impact on future physicians.
Despite the hardships and difficulties, despite the myriad of challenges, medical students of Dai Nam University, with the support of their families, schools and teachers, will overcome everything to become DOCTORS wearing the white coats of angels to bring health and cure diseases to the people.
