Optional subjects in the national high school exam for the northern mountainous region: History and Geography dominate

GD&TĐ - At this time, many provinces and cities have official statistics on the registration rate for elective subjects in the 2015 national high school exam . Information from some mountainous areas in the North shows that the rate of candidates choosing History and Geography is very high.

Over 50% of candidates choose to take History exam

That is the number provided by the Dien Bien Department of Education and Training from preliminary statistics of registration files for the 2015 national high school exam of candidates in the area.

According to Mr. Pham Quang Te - Head of the Department of Examination and Education Quality Assessment (Dien Bien Department of Education and Training), this year, the whole province has 6,214 candidates registered to take the exam, of which 2,871 candidates took the exam only for graduation; 2,462 candidates took the exam for both graduation and university and college admission; 881 candidates took the exam only for university and college admission.

Regarding registration for elective subjects, in this locality, natural sciences subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, and Biology are "weaker" than social sciences subjects.

While there were 3,962 candidates registered for the Geography exam (over 63%); 3,262 candidates chose the History exam (over 52%), the number of candidates registering for Physics was less than 20% with 1,076 candidates; Chemistry was less than 30% with 1,813 candidates and Biology was 1,632 candidates registered (about 26%). In 2014, the number of candidates choosing the History exam in Dien Bien was also very high.

This number is similar in Cao Bang. According to data from the Examination and Education Quality Assessment Department of the Cao Bang Department of Education and Training provided to the Education and Times newspaper , as of early this morning (May 5), 4,369 out of a total of 5,998 Cao Bang candidates registered for the Geography exam (nearly 73%); the number of candidates registering for the History exam was the second highest with over 52% (3,160 candidates).

Meanwhile, Physics had only 1,151 candidates registered (about 19%); Chemistry: 1,532 candidates registered (about 25%); Biology: 2,093 candidates registered (over 34%). The lowest was Foreign Language, with only 495 candidates registered.

In 2015, Cao Bang province had a total of 5,998 candidates taking the national high school exam ; of which 2,939 candidates took the exam only for graduation, 1,954 candidates took the exam for 2 purposes and 1,105 candidates took the exam only for university and college admission.

In Son La, although there are no official statistics, according to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Ha - Head of the Department of Examination and Education Quality Assessment (Department of Education and Training of Son La), in 2014, the number of candidates in the province choosing to take the History and Geography exams was very high.

In Ha Giang Province, in 2014, the number of candidates registered was evenly distributed, with the subjects being almost the same. Only the number of candidates registering for Foreign Language was very low because students lacked confidence in this subject. This year, this number will probably not change much.

Focus on revision

After completing the application collection, the exam registration points will transfer the data to the Department of Education and Training. Then, the Department will approve the application documents for the two purposes of graduation and university and college admission to transfer them to the university hosting the exam cluster according to each locality according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training.

At this time, the important task that the Department of Education and Training focuses on is to organize and implement the review plan in schools. Many localities, in parallel with this work, will organize surveys and evaluate the capacity of grade 12 students to help them practice before the national high school exam .

In Son La, the Department of Education and Training requested that schools organize for students to take the Ministry of Education and Training's sample exams seriously and proceed to grade and evaluate the results.

Then, based on the test results of teachers and students, schools need to organize experience sharing to guide and implement review for students. Teachers are also required to develop test questions in the direction of illustrative questions and organize mock tests for students, grade the tests, and evaluate the results.

In Dien Bien, according to Mr. Pham Quang Te, the Department of Education and Training has provided specific review instructions. Accordingly, review must ensure time, focusing on the requirements of knowledge and skills standards of the high school education program, mainly in the 12th grade program.

Focus on helping students improve their levels of understanding and application of knowledge; implement effective solutions to organize review sessions for students suitable for each group of students.

After the end of the school year, in addition to reviewing according to the plan, we will focus on increasing the time for students to study on their own. During the implementation process, there will be regular weekly checks and assessments; from there, the plan will be supplemented and adjusted promptly to ensure feasibility and effectiveness.

In Ha Giang, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Tran Duc Quy - Head of the Steering Committee for the 2015 Ha Giang Provincial Exam - directed: Exam review work is unified to be carried out within a period of 4 weeks for all students taking the national high school exam in the whole province.

The exam review time is clearly defined with 24 periods/8 subjects/class/week and each review class must ensure the size of 40 to 45 students/subject. The exam review time will be arranged immediately after completing the second semester program of the 2014-2015 school year.
