Nursing profession – the pillar of Vietnam's medical human resources
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Lien - the world's leading pediatric surgeon once commented on the work of nurses: "If there are only good doctors but no good nurses to take care of pre-, intra- and post-operative care, especially major surgeries such as deformities, orthopedics, cardiovascular, organ transplants... the surgery will certainly not be successful, and the patient will not be able to recover quickly and well."
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Bach Tuyet - Vice Principal of Dai Nam University, who has many years of experience in the nursing industry, also said: Nursing is one of the most unique professions among the unique professions. If doctors perform surgery and procedures, nurses are responsible for taking care of patients from admission to discharge, staying with patients 24/7.

According to MSc. Le Van Duy - Acting Head of Nursing Department, Dai Nam University, nursing is a noble profession, the pillar of Vietnam's medical human resources. Of the more than 300,000 medical staff, the number of doctors is about 70,000, nurses and midwives account for about 160,000, twice the number of doctors.
“ The work of a nurse is about 30% in coordination with doctors in examining, treating and caring for patients, while the remaining 70% is independent, professional work directly with patients from the time they enter the hospital, throughout the examination and treatment process, and upon discharge ,” said Master Le Van Duy.
Therefore, nurses are the first and last people to work with patients and their families, together with doctors, to create trust among patients and their families and to create satisfaction with medical examination and treatment services.
" The nursing profession must have 3Ts. (1) Good knowledge of nursing science, (2) Solid professional skills and (3) A bright heart, must know how to love the sick, fight with the sick and their families against illness, and regain human life and health ," emphasized Master Le Van Duy.

Increased practice, students benefit right from the classroom
According to the Ministry of Health, the country currently has over 73,000 doctors and nurses working in treatment, nearly 130,000 nurses and midwives working in medical examination and treatment facilities. The ratio of nurses - midwives / doctors is 1.8. The ratio of nurses per planned hospital bed is 0.395 and the actual hospital bed is 0.304, much lower than the regulations, countries in the region and in the world.
However, according to the research results of the Department of Science, Technology and Training; Vietnam Nursing Association in 2015, for every 4 nurses graduating, only 1 nurse has a job opportunity. The reason is said by experts that "learning does not go hand in hand with practice" , causing many nursing students to be "bewildered" and unable to keep up with the job when graduating.
“Practicing right after university is very important, helping students grasp knowledge firmly, not be surprised when doing internships and quickly get used to working at the hospital” – Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Bach Tuyet said.
MSc. Le Van Duy also believes that the professional skills of nurses must be formed through a practical process, step by step guiding them from the time they are still in the classroom. “ Teachers guide them from simple to complex techniques at the school’s skill practice facilities to reach a certain level. Then students continue studying at hospitals to directly care for patients under the direct guidance of teachers at the hospital, ” said MSc. Duy.
Therefore, at the Faculty of Nursing, Dai Nam University, students' practice and internship time accounts for 2/3 of the total study time, which means that one theory period will have three practice periods. To help students practice well, the school is developing a practice facility with full modern equipment, models, tools like hospitals and a team of good teachers so that students have enough conditions to learn nursing skills at the school.
In particular, students also have the opportunity to practice at major central hospitals. In addition, students of the Nursing Faculty, Dai Nam University also have the opportunity to study Japanese for free and have the opportunity to receive scholarships to study abroad in Japan if they have excellent achievements.
“ This is a new approach, in line with the current trend when the demand for nursing in many countries, especially in developed countries such as Japan, Korea, Germany - countries that are facing a crisis in nursing human resources to care for the elderly" , said Master Le Van Duy.

Practice is an extremely important element in nursing education.
Currently, Dai Nam University is cooperating with Japanese nursing homes to train and employ Vietnamese nursing staff to practice at nursing homes during their studies. After graduating from Dai Nam University, students who have the need and achieve good academic results will have the opportunity to work in Japan with high salaries and good working conditions. They can work long-term in Japan or when they return home, they will have great opportunities to work at medical facilities in Vietnam because of their good skills learned from Japan, said Le Van Duy, acting Dean of the Nursing Faculty.
In the near future, to help students better respond to work and keep up with the world's development trends, Dai Nam University will equip more 3D and 4D models, and open more clinics so that students have more opportunities for direct practice.
