Traveling thousands of kilometers to fulfill the dream of becoming a student at Dai Nam University
Thao A Chung's school bags consisted of a few sets of clothes, a few personal belongings and more than 10 million VND that her parents had collected from relatives and the bank. Before that, when she was a high school student, Chung had worked part-time and saved 4 million VND for the school day.
When he just received his high school diploma, he traveled thousands of kilometers from the Central Highlands to Hanoi determined to fulfill his dream of becoming a student at the Faculty of Tourism, Dai Nam University...
Working in the tourism industry has been Thao A Chung’s dream since childhood. This dream is the motivation that helps him overcome all difficulties and challenges to receive a high school diploma and travel thousands of kilometers from the Central Highlands to Hanoi to study at university. After carefully researching tourism training facilities, Chung decided to choose Dai Nam University to fulfill his dream. “I like the Faculty of Tourism at Dai Nam University because during the study process, students get to practice and work in the real world very early. The rate of students having jobs in their majors and living well with their jobs is very high…”, Chung confided.
Arriving in the capital, Chung went to Dai Nam University's campus at 56 Vu Trong Phung and spent time learning about the school before deciding to enroll. The luckiest thing for Chung was that his parents fully supported and created conditions for him to fulfill his dream - something that seemed very normal in many families, but for his family, it was a huge change and challenge.
In Chung’s village (30km from the district center), it is unusual for a family to send their children to finish middle or high school, let alone send them to the capital to study at university. “ There are 6 siblings in my family, 2 of my older sisters, born in 1997 and 1999, are married and have children. My childhood friends are all married now,” Chung said shyly.
No money to buy bus ticket to internship
On the day he officially became a new student of K12 of the Faculty of Tourism, Dai Nam University, Chung told himself: “I have to try, try really hard to study well…”. Coming to Hanoi, Chung rented a room near the school for convenience. After a while, he was able to do an internship at the school’s Lotus Legend Hotel, more than 5km away from his room. Chung said, “At first, I asked a friend to help me, but then I was too embarrassed to ask for help, so I took the bus to the hotel for my internship.”
But the little money in his school bag gradually dwindled, and he no longer had enough money to buy a bus ticket. He was shy about asking for help, so he decided to walk so as not to depend on anyone. “Every day, I walk to school and then to practice, and it takes almost an hour to get to the hotel,” Chung said.
Every day, they walk to school and then to practice, walking for nearly an hour to reach the school hotel.
Never give up on your dream
Living far away, having a difficult family situation, and no relatives in Hanoi, seeing the young man walking to school and practice every day, many people feel sorry for Giang A Chung's 4-year journey to university in the capital. However, becoming a student is Chung's most burning dream. He had to make efforts and overcome many difficulties to complete 12 years of high school, and with his parents, he saved every penny to have more than 10 million VND for the first day of school. Chung understands better than anyone that only studying can bring him the opportunity to change his life and help him create a bright future for himself and his family. "No matter how difficult it is, I will never give up. I will work part-time, learn how to spend more reasonably... and I firmly believe that Dai Nam University will help me fulfill my dream ", Chung affirmed.
Surprise gifts from teachers, friends...
Immediately after learning about Thao A Chung's difficult situation, the homeroom teacher of Tourism class 12-01 reported it to the Faculty's leaders. After investigating and verifying the information, the Tourism Faculty reported the situation to the School's Board of Directors. Immediately, Chung was given the opportunity by the School to do an internship at the school's Lotus Legend Hotel to stabilize his life and study. Not only did he get to practice the profession of his major, Chung was also supported with 2 meals at the hotel, clothing support, and a monthly allowance of more than 2 million VND to cover his study expenses.
The Faculty of Tourism also instructed the homeroom teacher to help Chung share a room with other students in the class to save on monthly rent, helping him learn more detailed ways to save money.
Ms. Cao Thi Hoa - Vice Principal represented and presented bicycles to student Thao A Chung.
In particular, from the donation of Ms. Cao Thi Hoa - Vice Principal, leader of the Faculty of Tourism and the collective of QTDL class 12-01, the Faculty bought Chung a bicycle to go to school and do an internship. “I am very touched and happy when teachers and friends care and share the difficulties. So from now on, I will not have to walk to school or to the hotel anymore. I have a place to both study and earn money to support myself. I am very happy…” Chung said with a choked voice.
Sharing about the situation of student Thao A Chung, Ms. Cao Thi Hoa - Vice Principal said: "The school is very touched and appreciates the spirit of overcoming difficulties of students like Thao A Chung. Hopefully, with the companionship and support of the school, teachers, and friends, Chung will quickly stabilize his life and study effectively at Dai Nam University..."
“Each attention is an opportunity to help disadvantaged security guards like me feel warm, motivated and confident to try harder…” , Mr. Le Sy Nguyen - Head of the Faculty of Tourism, representing the Faculty, sent his deep thanks to the teachers and students in the school.
